~ Tam-Awan ~

..Indeed a Magnificent Place..

......"A Heaven for an Artist".....

My sister invited me to go to this place called "Tam-awan" which I have no idea what the word means and where it is......

It was on "Rated K" episode where I have seen this place describe as a Home of arts for students during summer. Located in the foot of the mountain where stood the native Ifugao hut that was transformed into a place where Arts flourishes... The place indeed was so cool, so close to nature and called an Artist Haven... I was so excited as ever and really can't say much how I appreciated the place. It's kinda mixture of native and modern arts combined that comes out into a different era of the artistic world today. I am no artist at all yet I know how to appreciate Arts.... from stage plays, paintings, oregami, ikebana , etc...

Let me give you a glimpse of what Tam-awan is...

Tam-awan Village uniquely blends indigenous aesthetics and exquisite Ifugao craftsmanship with an artist's concept for a village adapted the Baguio setting. Right now Tam-awan is under the management of the Chantum Foundation, who began to re-construc Ifugao houses in Baguio with the view of making a village model accessible to people who have not had the chance to travel to the Cordillera interior. Building on a land near an abundant spring., the foundation started out with three knocked-down huts transported from Bangaan, Ifugao. The village now has seven Ifugao huts and two Kalinga houses. Using the original materials and adding only new cogon roofs, traditional artisans reconstructed the houses and laid them out resembling the design of a traditional Cordillera Village.

An Ifugao house is compact and though deceptively simple, its architecture is quite sophisticated. Built by clever mortisans without nails or hardware, it exemplifies the exactness of Ifugao construction. With the exemption of reed and cogon used in the roofs, the entire house uses heavy hand-hewn timber. elevated to about shoulder height by four post usually made of hard wood, the house with periodid re-roofing, can last several generations.

The Kalinga house is a more spacious commode and is made with the same hand-hewn pine wood. The binayon is the traditional octagonal house of Southern Kalinga Province and Tam-awam Village is proud to present one the three remaining such houses in the country today.

In keeping with the spirit in which the village was originally concieved, Tam-awan Village has become a venue for art exhibits and workshops envisioned to foster a deeper understanding, respect and pride in the cultural heritage of the cordillera people.

The village is an experience in intself. By the living in the huts, its guest get an opportunity to immerse in an atmosphere that allow them to get a glimpse of village life.

On a clear day, a magnificent China Sea sunset can be viewed from the village, giving to its name as Tam-awan, that is, vantage point.
